do you use reference pictures or do you draw your pics on free hand?

It depends. I always use some kind of reference for vectors, sometimes its a hand sketch that I scan in, sometimes its a photo. I usually only use photos for the basic placement of the facial features and outline of the body, which I then change quite a bit since my illustrations are not to human proportions. Once I have my new silhouette, I go in and add all the facial features, shading and whatnot freehand. However if I am doing an illustration for likeness (the self portrait of me for ex), then its a different story, and I do use a photo reference bit for bit. Hope that answers it, and thanks for the favs!
